Master Ramiz Ayyub oghlu Guliyev (Ramiz Əyyub oğlu Quliyev), born on April 30, 1947, in the city of Aghdam, Azerbaijan, was one of the most distinguished tar players, music educators, and enduring figures in Azerbaijani musical art. Through his exceptional mastery of the tar and his performances of traditional and mugham music, he made a valuable contribution to introducing Azerbaijani music to international audiences.
Master Guliyev began his musical education in Aghdam and studied tar performance and orchestral conducting at the Azerbaijan State Conservatory from 1964 to 1969. In addition to his professional performing career, he spent many years teaching and training new generations of musicians. From 1992 to 2002, he served as Head of the Department of National Musical Instruments at the Azerbaijan State Conservatory.
Master Ramiz Guliyev performed in numerous countries around the world, including Japan, the United States, Canada, Iran, Turkey, and many European countries. His international performances played an important role in introducing Azerbaijani music and the tar to audiences worldwide. In 1989, as part of the Silk Road Festival, he performed in more than 30 cities across Japan.
Among his many honors were the title of People's Artist of Azerbaijan in 1988, the State Prize of the Republic of Azerbaijan in 2014, and the prestigious Shohrat Order in 2007 and Sharaf Order in 2017.
Master Ramiz Guliyev passed away on October 15, 2025, at the age of 78. His artistic legacy, memorable performances, and educational contributions remain a valuable part of Azerbaijani musical history, and his name will continue to live on in the cultural memory of Azerbaijan.
